..i think it should be a panel decision on who gets nominated.
When people find out about the awards, THATS when people email they momma, sista, grandma, cousins, pastors, coaches…and the latter to get them to go online and nominate them.
I mean i guess thats part of the hustle, but it will always be open season on these things imo.

although i did nominate dj heat multiple times. even as the best supportive sex symbol in radio. Ow…

Congrats to all the nominees!!! Special shout out to my brothers Substantial and Diggz. Also, Mambo Sauce & Chris Wright.
As for quality production, I think Sub should get that video award, no bias, just actually view the videos and you decide.
@Top Dog Hill Substantial is actually from Landover, just been up Bmore most recently.
Oh yeah and lastly, Gods'Illa intends to be all over the list next year, stay tuned!!! PEACE.

I agree with what dwayne said…. I’m not a fan of the process because it takes away from the integrity of the awards show… 50% of the nominees I never even heard of and not to say that if I ain’t heard of u that’s say all end all, but it is a little strange…
I think it should be a panel to atleast narrow the categories down to who can be voted for so every tom dick n harry wit a long email list doesn’t become the next nominee.. Lol aye Heat Could u imagine who the Bet or Mtv artist of the year would be if this was the process E40 and some blogger over someone like jeezy cause of there Internet presence…
We gotta step it up… I’ve never been the type to trip off not being nominated cause the truth always prevails… But the DMV awards are so jokish that I question if I wanna show up… Basically to sum it up…. Can the powers that be make this a little more realistic cause the city really needs this it builds healthy competition if it’s done correctly…….
but the way it is now with people being nominated in wrong categories and anybody wit an extensive email list regardless of stats being able to be a nominee.. It’s no different then what I hear everyone complaining about when these promoters charge artist to perform in front of a crowd… It’s a payday for somebody.. You give everyone a chance to be nominated to win an award now you buying tables and bottles and paying admission to be exploited…
Some people gonna look at this like hating and please respon don’t be a faceless hater…
But my real niggas gonna know when ur passionate about what u do…. BS annoys the shit out of you…
Peace Heat

Mr. Topp Dogg, I can vouch for Substantial cuz I’ve known him since like ’98. Even rapped on a track with him. (Yes, rapped lol). He runs in a different circle than most of the DMV artists that we know. He’s part of a HUGELY popular undeground hip-hop collective. He moved from the area some years back, and that’s when he really took off. Just one of those stories of an artist moving from the area and getting that bigger push somewhere else.
Mo, I agree with you. I think a panel would be best in picking the nominees AND the winners. Like how the other awards shows do things. Hopefully next year that will happen.

@HEAT
I WASNT SAYIN NUTHIN BAD ABOUT SUBSTANTIAL
IF YOU READ WHAT I SAID…I SAID THAT I DIDNT KNOW WHO HE WAS SO I WENT TO HIS PAGE AND SAW 500,000 PLAYS, SHOWS IN JAPAN AND GERMANY, AND HIS LOCATION SAID BMORE
IVE NEVER HEARD OF HIM…BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN ANYTHING AT ALL
BUT HIS 500,000 PLAYS AND SHOWS OVERSEAS MEAN EVERYTHING;-)
SO IN MY HUMBLE OPINION I BELIEVE HE DESERVES ALL HIS NOMINATIONS
ALSO MS. WONDERFUL DJ HEAT(LOL)…I WOULD NEVER ARGUE WITH YOU CAUSE IN ’98 I WAS STILL IN WEST ATLANTA….AND I WAS 14 YEARS OLD LOLOLOL

Personally, Im not for the whole campaigning for a nomination. I think that is for people that dont have a true following. If your known people will show u love. Your buzz will do the work for you!
With that being said. I want to show love to all the people who did get nominated. No matter what its an honor to be recognized by your peers!
See u all at the awards…

The Process is Simple: The public has the opportunity to go on line and vote for their favorite in each category.
Votes are tallied per category.
The names with the MOST votes, land in the top 7 – to become the top 7 nominees in the category.
Its a Democracy – a public sanction. If you don’t have enough support from the public, you wont have enough votes.

@Dee Woods….as an artist, you can't just expect your fanbase to arbitrarily support your every move. They have to know about it first. Too many local artists do not understand the importance of Marketing. Most of my supporters didn't even know a DMV award show existed until I asked them to nominate me.
1. The DMV Awards will only be taken as seriously as the artists that are nominated.
2. An awards show that you have to PAY to perform in??? WTF!!!
3. Basing nominations on popularity instead of Talent will continually mar the integrity of this event.
4. Who has a better idea? Who has what it takes to do the awards show "right"? Who will take the time to listen to every song by every artist in the DC, Maryland & VA Area? Who will go and do the research to see who is performing, who is recording, and who is moving units?
If its NOT you….If You cannot actually contribute a solution and make it happen, then support what IS here.
I can sit on the sidelines and talk about how things could be….or I can support the effort. It has to start somewhere.
see u at the awards…..

JMilz – I understand what you are saying about keeping your fanbase informed but I still think that this process allowed for people who werent really the Top 7 to be nominated. I think that the nominations should come from a panel that consist of people who heavy into the DMV Music scene – Managers, DJs & Promoters! U can even give artists a vote and say "with the exception of yourself, fill in the ballot"! That way your are really nominated by your peers. Thats how they do the SAG Awards and it works for them! Lol

i’m just gonna ditto what i said on Judah’s blog ’cause its way too long to type all those thoughts all over again! lls (just remember that this was based on comments in another blog, not this one…love ya Heat! *wink*)
“yo…its like this…i don’t like the process anymore than most ya’ll do. The process to get nominated in the first place is the issue…NOT the artists! i agree that there are some obvious omissions of GREAT talent that should be in ALL of these categories! like the gospel category…other than Mo’ Betta (who i still don’t know how he keeps getting in this category when dude maintains that he is not an artist) who else do you know that you would have put in that category? i can honestly say that i don’t know any of them either…but at the same time, because i don’t really know that genre i can’t say that those people don’t deserve to be there! i wouldn’t even know who i would nominate for that category or who SHOULD be there either. but SOMEHOW because of the process they were nominated…can’t knock them for taking advantage of the system. if ya’ll thought XO, Lyriciss and all those that should be nominated, then ya’ll should have voted for them whether they “campaigned” or not to get nominated. its like complaining who is President, but you didn’t vote…feel me? It’s the process…like it or not.
i’m just saying that, that don’t mean the people who DID get nominated are not grinding too. some of them got on because of a strong email campaign…some got on because the are “online superstars” (lol)…and some got one purely by working they ass off to at least be in the conversation of being the best of the best. regardless of how they got there, or who is not on there, we should take our time to get to know who IS nominated….thats all i’m saying.
i’m a fan of all the folks Vice Life mentioned and PLENTY others that were not nominated in other categories as well…BUT instead of calling it fluke, do something to make it better then. volunteer to be apart of the process for next year. or get a coalition of folks together and do whole ‘nother award show then.
the way i see it is, IF this award show means nothing because its fluke, then why everybody seem to be so damn upset by it? personally, i don’t give a damn who wins. i’m just look at it as another way to get people to know and hear about Konshens. to us its more of an “advertising” tool since dude don’t get a chance otherwise in this city to get recognized. i don’t really care if you think he better or worse than the next artist. all i care about is keeping this train moving and getting as much exposure as you can get an artist. and THATS how this business is supposed to work. being underground is cool, but thats what plagued this city for so long. people don’t know how to take it to the next level. and exposure…any positive exposure is the key…trust me, i know.
so if you think he is fluke because he got nominated through a fluke process, then i say you are wrong. if you say that he don’t deserve to be there, then i say you are wrong too. there are alot of questionable nominees, no doubt about that, but those people did what they had to…they followed the rules and this is where it landed them….no more, no less.
i like that alot of ya’ll are saying “who the hell is that?” one of the Topp Dogg dudes went to look up Substantial on myspace and saw that dude had 500,000 song play and been traveling around the world touring. thats what i mean…just because YOU (or even myself) has never heard of these folks don’t mean they not legit. hell, i never heard of Substantial until DJ Heat hipped me to him and recommended we get him up at Haydees…why? Because i thought someone doing that much needed EXPOSURE where people can see that this dude deserved to be nominated for something! just like alot of artists we tried to bring up there…especially the b-more acts that we down here in DC are not familiar with. but ya’ll rather put someone down and call them fluke just because they don’t run in the circles you run….ok…thats cool and thats your opinion. hell, when i watch the grammy’s i don’t know half of the folks nominated and the one’s i do know i don’t half way agree with them getting a nomination either…but then, I’m not a part of the process. I can care less who won a grammy or not…I’m gonna like who I like and buy whoever CD I want based on my taste, not because that person got a damn grammy!
there are ALOT of popular artists out there that probably SHOULD be nominated. i say we BOND together so for next year and the years after that, that we make sure those people DO get recognized. tearing it down now is not doing any damn good.
thats what is wrong with this city right now. everything gotta be easy for it to be right. we don’t work towards nothing positive…we don’t know how to BUILD…well, at least not yet…i think we are learning how to be a city that BUILDS artists. i think we are becoming a music city (and arts in general). but we just don’t have it quite right yet. we don’t quite know how to handle people trying to be successful, because we don’t know what “success” looks like as a music city.
i’ve been around this music scene in DC for over 20 years dating back to my go-go band days…and after traveling around this country and seeing cities go from no music to music meccas, and spending time working for labels in NY, i can tell you what people think of the music scene in DC…and its not good! everything negative that is being said in this blog is EXACTLY what they think of us…this is EXACLTY what i had to defend when i worked for labels in NY trying to convince them that Nonchalant, Black Indian and maybe a few others were not anomalies! trying to tell them that there is more to DC music than go-go…which outside the beltway they hate…well, they like the commercial go-go but not in its pure form anyway.
but most of ya’ll don’t have the benefit of seeing what i’ve seen…i can understand that…and i’m only one person. thats why we don’t need this right now. we are on the cusp of being a powerhouse music market…but this is the shit that tears us down everytime. we just can’t seem to get our shit together and get right!
so i say all of this to say…QUIT YOUR BITCHING AND START A REVOLUTION!!! (a music one, that is!)”

btw…i like deewoodz idea…like the SAG…it should be more like a panel and then by your peers. but that takes some real organizing, which we have yet to perfect…then again, i think people forget that this in ONLY the 3rd year of this show…it’ll get there…with comments like the one dee woodz said it should spark some convo and maybe some action!

I’m not sure which catagories you were looking at when you said that the people grindin and releasing good music weren’t nominated; but, as for my category there are some real talented people. Kevin Ross, Kyonte, and I know I grind for damn sure…maybe the process aint the greatest, but in the end the winners are picked by a panel like the one most of the commenters are saying we should have for the nomination round. So, not having participated before, it seems like the best person would still win the award…besides, its just the nominations so I don’t see why people are trippin…just my two cents..1 myspace.com/dcsnexttoblow
