So today I get a mass email sent out by Jazzy B of Battle Music Group. It was an article written by Mary Turner called Hot Mess at the 3rd Annual DMV EMAs. Of course I read it, because I’ve been asking several people about their thoughts on the awards show. I’m reading the article, and then I come to this:

DJ Kash Monee, CEO of WKSH, adamantly rejected the idea of DJ Heat winning the awards.
“DJ Heat doesn’t even play or support underground artists in the DMV,” he said. DJ Kash Monee, whose three radio stations reach over a million listeners daily, is a previous two-time DMV EMA winner and A&R for Warner Music Group.
Really?? I don’t play or support DMV artists? Wooooow. Okay. lol I’m not sweating that statement, because I know what I do. The thing that gets me is that Kash Monee has never addressed ME if he feels that way. Dude even came up to me at the awards and we exchanged courtesies. What’s even funnier, is this is not the first time that I’ve heard about Kash Monee saying something about me. I didn’t let it bother me, because if I didn’t hear it straight from the person, I’m not gonna accuse folks. But to see it in print. And like I said, we even exchanged greetings and a few sentences at the award. All the time I guess he felt this way. *sigh* I wouldn’t mind talking to this dude face to face. I pride myself on my name and what I do. When someone says other wise, I like getting it straightened out.

The 3rd Annual DMV Entertainment & Music Awards was advertised as the event of the year for underground artists in the area. With scandal and controversy surrounding the event and its sponsors, the event left many artists upset.
Despite the built up buzz, and a pre-event nominee party hosted by Target Squad at the largest nightclub in D.C. — Sunday’s awards show was a hot mess. With a feeble attempt at a red carpet, unorganized seating, and a slew of production hiccups, the show ran about as smooth as kindergarten Christmas pageant.
Hosted by Onix from VH1’s “I Love New York”, and “I Love Money: Season 2,” the highly anticipated pre-show event left much to be desired. Aside from Mya, Lil’ Mo, Mambo Sauce, and Jon Boy from “The White Rapper Show”, the crowd showed little excitement for the other artists who walked the 10 foot long “gold” carpet.
Inside the Hampton Conference Center, VIP tables were decorated nicely; however it didn’t take long to turn that into a mess as well. Within the hour, the tables were covered with business cards, demos, and flyers. All the pre-show self-promotion helped push back the show by nearly two hours.
After a never-ending video montage of the nominees played on the large side screens, the audience was then treated to an offbeat, sloppy dance routine by the dance troupe Dynamic. One of the dancers from Dynamic admitted backstage that he had just learned the steps to the dance the night before, and it showed.
The show then hit another bump when a poor audience reaction to the hosts, DJ Rico and Lil’ Mo, inspired the pair to turn around and do-over their entrance, only this time directing the audience to “make some noise.”

In an attempt to “kash” in on the DJ’s popularity, the awards show’s producer, Mahogany Jones, tried to pressure Monee into “donating” over three thousand dollars to broadcast the event live.
DJ Kash Monee said in a post-show interview that he would never agree to “pay for his right to freedom of the press.” Monee also put a station wide ban on any coverage of the DMV EMAs.
The DMV Entertainment &Music Awards, founded by Brother Maniac, is intended to honor and recognize outstanding artists who maintain residency in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. However, when local artists realized that many of the sponsors, like Brother Maniac and Mahogany Jones, were nominated and/or won, they spoke out against it.
Pre-show host, Onix, said that “the underground hip hop community here in the DMV needs to take a lesson from the rock music community; they need to start legitimately supporting each other.”
Jazzy B, CEO of Battle Music Group also said, “Sponsors should absolutely not be nominated.”
Jazzy B, who was nominated for Best Manager, said that an award loses its legitimacy when people think it has been bought.
Producer of the year nominee, Text Sosa disagreed, saying that many of the artists who are nominated have the funds to sponsor the event because “they grind harder than everyone else.” Sosa said that just because a nominee is a sponsor, that does not mean they don’t deserve to win.
On the other hand, several non-sponsoring artists, like Shy Thoro, La Vie, and Dre all day in the paint, were loudly applauded and supported as they accepted their awards.
Best Producer of the year, X-Quiz, received an especially large applause. Having had supplied many in the room with beats last year, X-Quiz was clearly a fan favorite.
“He makes some of the hottest beats in the DMV” said Prhyme, a well known female MC and Detroit Native. After touring for the last year, Prhyme said she looks forward to releasing new singles produced by X-Quiz this summer.
Around 1:00 am, the last of the awards were handed out, and while the event provided an opportunity for underground artists to meet-and-greet prominent industry figures in the area, the usefulness of the event amounted to little more than a reunion for most.

This article should not come as any surprise. Every year after the DMV Awards you’ll find a lot of people (who didn’t win) complaining about it. The person who wrote this clearly had a negative agenda she was pursuing.
The DMV EMA’s is only in its’ 3rd year of existence and it’s not perfect. However, Bro. Maniac is listening to both the positive and negative criticism and he’s working to make improvements every year.
For the record, I will state that I’ve heard several respected DMV artists say they don’t think that persons affiliated with the Awards program should be nominated in order to avoid conflicts of interests.

though i didnt go, i support the idea of the awards. folks in media often have a compulsion to be pessimistic and negative in order to sell a story. its all for the controversy in a nutshell. we all know and see Heat out in the streets for real, not on no industry ish — cause believe me, she could be all up in those other spots rubbing elbows with the ‘celebrities’ on a regular … but she’s out with the population of the ‘DMV’. can’t ask for too much more than that na’mean …..

I’m disappointed with a lot of things in this post. We are going to have to do better as a unit and as a city. People act as if the DMV Awards govern who they are. If you don’t win, FUCK IT. I rarely comment on things but its like getting mad at someone with diarrhea because you’re constipated. Straight nonsense. I’m not concerned with what people think about the DMV awards nor do I care about who wins or doesn’t- Can we shoot for grammys? PLEASE?? as far as the awards go.. i respect that cats tryin to do an awards show and all that..i really do but, my criticisms…
1. u cant nominate yourself and the people sponsoring and helping (maniac, m jones, dre all day and whoever else)
2. u should be able to vote only from one IP address, and u should have to verify the email.
3. who were the distinguished panelists?
4. if u gonna have an award show u cant charge the nominees to get in! thats blasphemy. that just makes it look like a hustle.
5. with 3 shows under your belt- the next one should def be free of charge for all! then u will have 5000 people not 400. get some good sponsors and such and u wont have to foot that 15,000 bill

I AM THE AUTHOR of the article–so I will speak for myself thank you.
First of all, as a jounalist, it is not my job to blaze my own opinions on to my stories. I let the actions, thoughts, manners, and quotes of the people I interview show through my work for me. So please keep that in mind.
Next,
As for DJ Heat–I understand that you may have restrictions as to what you can and cannot spin while you are on FM radio airwaves. I also know from the extensive talk I had today with Brother Maniac–you are loyal to the underground artists whenever you have the opportunity to do so. I am not the one who was shouting out for you to “play us on the radio.” But I will report relavant information in my story. Believe me though, MANY ARTISTS complained about your win. I am not saying that it is justified for them to complain, I am not saying you do or dont deserve to win…….Im just saying Kash was not the only person to speak out about sponsors being nominated, and main stream DJ’s being recognized. But it would have been repetative to the news story to make a list. Besides, its only a few peoples opinion of you, and not everyones. So keep doin’ what you doin’.
Now…..onto other accusations about things in my story being false….
1)EVERYONE who was at the event knows that the sounds system kept fucking up…so how was that a lie?
2)The hosts of the show DID have to re-do their entrance…..so how was that a lie?
3)The “gold” carpet WAS a little skimpy ass 10-foot long rug……so how was that a lie?
4)The dancers were off-beat several times during their performance, AND most of the dancers that I talked to backstage even admitted they had screwups…..so how was that a lie?
5)Some of the sponsors WERE nominated, and some of the DID win…..so how was that a lie?
So tell me where in my story was anything a lie? If anything is a lie in my story, it is not from my lips…..
And as far as mastering my “craft”, I don’t need to even think about it, because I do the best I can on a daily basis. I am a mother, a wife, a student, a teacher, a musician, a reporter, a friend, a veteran, and much more. I haven’t mastered anything yet, but i strive for excellence in everything I do.
There is room for improvement in all of us—and there is room for the DMV EMAs to grow and get better. This article is not about “trashing” the INTENTION of the awards show….but rather critiquing the problems that need to be addressed for next year.

Mary, my problem is not with your writing. My problem was not with you mentioning the chanting you heard (BTW, I was all the way in the back and didn’t hear the chanting you wrote about). My problem is with DJ Kash Monee saying that I DON’T play or support local artists. That’s a flat out lie. How would he feel if I said that about him? I would never say that though, cuz I respect what he does with WKSH and saying something like that would be crazy and false. But to say that about me is crazy and false. How do I not support anyone when I started this site just for the DMV artists? How do I not support anyone when I go out and watch the artists perform just on the humble? How do I not support when I have a mixtape series just for them going on it’s 4th year? How do I not support when I put DMV artists on my more national mixtapes as well? How do I not support when I give these artists the real about how the radio business is, but offer them the ways to get them the success without major commercial radio? How do I not play local artists when I hosted Home Jamz for over a year and 90% of the songs played on each edition was selected by me? How do I not play artists when a great deal of the unsigned artists heard on WPGCHD2 were all because of me? I can go on and on, but I shouldn’t have to. Those artists really close to me know that I’m not one to speak on everything that I do because I’m not like that. I feel that what I do speaks for itself. But for someone to say I do nothing?! That’s crazy! Everything I do every single day is to help the DMV music scene. I’ve been a fan of the DMV scene, and supporting this scene since I was teenager in the 90s. From passing out flyers for the Underground Sound show on WPFW as a teen, to going to State of the Union, to the tales of Freestyle Union, to my writings in my college paper up til the DJ Heat ya’ll know today. I refuse to have a crazy lie told on me. This isn’t about awards at all. This isn’t about how people feel about me winning. Heck, I’m proud to say I did not ask not ONE person to nominate me, and people did it anyway. This here is about a fellow DJ…a DJ I thought I was cool with…a DJ that greeted me at these awards AFTER I had won…a DJ that SAW ME at a DMV event supporting folks and we sat side by side and he gave me his number this past fall…this is about a DJ that did all that, and showed me a side of him I didn’t know he had by telling the craziest lie in the world on me. THAT is what this is about! I refuse to have my work get tarnished by a lie. And I thank all the artists that have given me words about this situation. Thanks a million. I’m not a negative person, so when something totally and completely negative gets said about me, it gets to me.

I feel what you are saying and I agree. You can see that you can’t please everybody and people are going to have some shit to say because they are unhappy about something within themselves. As long as you keep doing what you do…don’t stop and fuck what niggaz got to say about it.

As far as the negativity going on… This is EXACTLY what's wrong with the DMV. Tearing each other down instead of building each other up.
Business & Personal are SEPARATE. Keep them that way & things run smoothly (as possible). We thought we were ALL adults and knew how to handle disagreements better than this. If u got words for someone, pull them aside and let them know, which can be done without further conflict if BOTH parties are mature and open. Sometimes u gotta think to urself, is it even worth mentioning and getting all worked up over?? MORE times than none..it REALLY ISN'T.
Positively breeds positivity, and negativity breeds negativity.
We ALL need constructive criticism and not EVERYONE is gonna like EVERYONE. Thats just NOT the way the world works. If u know u are on ur grind & doing things that r REAL, POSITIVE, TRUE, & w/ PASSION…the RIGHT PEOPLE WILL NOTICE and that's all that matters.

Hello DMV … First let me say this, I was one of the “distinguished panelists” that voted in the DMV EMA’s. I am media and was not invited to the event BUT I am not salty about it nor do I have anything negative to say about Brother Maniac. I just decided to chalk it up as an event I just wouldn’t attend.
Now, I read most of your comments and overall the amount of immaturity and lack of personal/professional accountability amazes me. The time and effort it takes for you to post negative comments is mind-boggling. This same time could have been used to ASSIST Brother Maniac with developing a better event or developing an event on your own to help yourself and other artists. A lot of you I know of … some of you (you know who you are) have attempted to be just as disrespectful to me … and the fact you continue to be disrespectful & ungrateful will continue to hold you back. To simply put it … Brother Maniac … I respect what you do. I support you. Unlike many people that want to point out flaws in you and your events … I extend my hand to assist you where ever you need. DMV artists heed this, “You never know under what circumstances you will encounter someone in the future that you have disrespected. Also, you better hope they have a forgiving heart and decide to help you.” For you artists that are upset because you spent hundreds of dollars for a table … well … I think that was stupid. Stop trying to be something that you are not or can’t afford … just to show off. Realize that things happen and move on. Don’t spend it unless you have it. The more you complain about what you didn’t get IN A PUBLIC forum makes you look very silly. Lastly, the effort it takes to write negative things in a public forum instead of speaking to a person one-on-one shows your personal character and will hinder you in many ways presently and in the future.
