The main objective of this event is to raise awareness about depression and anxiety conditions, as well as to bring attention to youth suicide using a one day, single elimination basketball tournament as our platform. Here are some facts you may or may not be aware of that justifies the need for immed…iate action regarding this issue. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for college students, the 3rd leading cause of death for black males ages 15-24 and the 4th leading cause of death of black males ages 10-14. Every 100 minutes a youth is the victim of suicide. Approximately every 45 seconds a young person attempts suicide. Our intention is to bring the community together by way of sporting and entertainment events such as this one, so that we can get the word out about this very serious illness and save lives.

Another key objective of this charity event is to raise funds for research and treatment of this illness, as well as to help with the day to day operations of 1 LYFE @ A TIME. 1 LYFE is able to exist and function solely through the help of volunteers, donations, sponsorship, and event proceeds. All money raised goes toward the fore mentioned purposes, and to assisting to offset the expenses that may be incurred to sponsor future 1 LYFE events.

It is a commonly known fact that during the Christmas season there are many people in our community who view this time of year as a sad occasion. There are many families who are less fortunate than others and may not be able to provide toys or other gifts for their kids during this time. In our current economic state, I’m certain that depression has already begun to creep its way into the households of many of these families, even more so in the minds and thoughts of their children. To help relieve some of the pressures that are caused during this stressful time, we will be hosting a toy drive during the course of the tournament. We will encourage those who can afford to do so to bring an unopened toy for a child in need. All of the toys will be distributed to organizations that support needy kids at Christmas time.

1 LYFE also recognizes the importance of supporting the local entrepreneur. In order to conquer any obstacle that threatens the youth in our community we must first come together and show support for those in and around our area who are working hard to set a positive example for our youth. In an effort to achieve this goal, 1 LYFE will be hosting a vendors’ exhibit in which local businesses, independent vendors, non-profit organizations, and selected special interest groups will have the opportunity to showcase their goods and services to the public. We believe that this will provide an excellent networking forum and provide a bridge between the small businessman and their potential consumers throughout the area. This exhibit will also be a source of much needed factual information serving a variety of different issues that affects us all.

Last but certainly not least, 1 LYFE always aims to promote a fun and entertaining family atmosphere. We are currently looking to retain the services of some of the area’s best local talent to come out and perform for those who attend. A host of singers, musicians, dancers, and comedians are being solicited for this event to provide entertainment before and during half-times of selected games. There will also be factual information presented about depression and anxiety disorders by several guest speakers who specialize in the area of suicide prevention and treatment of depression.

Without the help of our community and local businesses, this event will never reach its full potential. Sponsors and volunteers are desperately needed. We are reaching out to you in hopes of obtaining some assistance with sponsoring this event and also getting the word out on this very important issue. We are actively searching for anyone who shares the passion we have to save our kids. Currently we are in the process of contacting several local radio stations, magazines, news publications, local political figures, and community activist to solicit their support for this potentially life altering event. “Together we can make a difference, 1 LYFE @ A TIME”
